During the last ten years, the CIF biophysics laboratory has been engaged in research work in the field of electrophysiology. Undoubtedly, it is the best-equipped laboratory of its kind in Colombia and one of the better equipped at Latin American level. Equipment available allows measuring currents through ionic channels in cell membranes, either in nerve cells, in animal or plant cells or in microorganism. Besides, studies are being pursued in the field of molecular biology pertaining to channels as mentioned.
Counting on financial support provided by Colciencias and the Welcome Trust, from England , a study on the host cell-parasite relationship in Leishmaniasis is currently under way. Depending on the species, this disease is caused by an obligate intracellular parasite that can compromise skin, mucosae and viscera alike. The disease attacks the population living in tropical areas around the world. As a result of research carried out in the subject, a conclusion has been reached to the effect that the occurrence of this parasite alters potassium permeability and some membrane properties of the parasite host cell. During a second phase of the project, we expect to be able to determine whether these changes have a bearing on the parasite survival. This research work should contribute a great deal of knowledge on the parasite and mechanisms for adaptation to its host cell. |
